Plant-Based BBQ Ideas

Gone are the days when a vegan bbq meant corn on the cob and a side salad. Now there are so many great plant-based sausages and burgers available that everyone should be able to enjoy something charred in a bun, because that’s what bbqs are all about!

Plant-based doesn’t have to mean processed though, great salads and sides can add flavour and colour to any bbq. Grilled vegetables are amazing, brush with oil on some of the staples like sliced aubergine, tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, onions and even quartered cabbage, pop them on the grill for the easiest and tastiest grilled veg salad.

There are plenty of great recipes for veg based burgers if you want to make your own, portobello mushrooms topped with ‘free from’ pesto also made a quick and fabulous natural alternative to processed burgers.  There is also a whole world of marinades for tofu and tempeh that work well as kebabs or ‘steaks’ on the grill.

Plant based cheeses are getting better all the time, Violife slices are perfect to go on a burger, along with the usual sauces like ketchup, American mustard, and bbq sauce which are generally vegan already. Don’t forget the gherkins and maybe even some jalapeno slices for a spicy kick!

Get some vegan mayo to make the classic summer side of potato salad, and corn on the cob is now even easier to veganise now that Flora’s whole range of spreads is now plant based. If you like it spicy you can sprinkle a little chilli powder and lime juice on your (plant-based) buttery corn, or for an Indian street-food flavour use Chaat Masala which you can find in some large supermarkets or in Asian stores.

We love this American style coleslaw recipe for a BBQ, the dill and gherkins give it a zingy twist and the toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds add a delicious nutty flavour, as well as some extra crunch and nutrition.
